由来
  • 英国殖民时期，虽然提供学前教育的学府已经存在，但未成为主流。
  • 1960年代，新加坡人民行动党 (People's Action Party) 开始兴办学前教育机构，当时人民协会 (People's Association，简称“人协”) 也参与兴办幼稚园课程的计划。
  • 1986年，人民行动党社区基金会 (PAP Community Foundation) 成立，所有该党属下的幼稚园，也被命名为“人民行动党社区基金会幼稚园”。
  • 目前的幼稚园可分为政府资助的幼稚园、由商业机构管理的私人幼稚园、宗教团体如教堂和回教堂管理的宗教性幼稚园，以及由社区团体管理的幼稚园，目前新加坡最大的学前教育机构是人民行动社区基金会。
  • 本地的幼稚园一 般为三至六岁的孩童提供三年的学前教育。2014年开始，教育部兴办了教育部幼稚园 (MOE Kindergartens)，主要为五岁和六岁的孩童提供学前教育。
  • 幼稚园大多提供不超过半天的课程，分上下午两班，每一班上课时间大约三至四小时，与全天的托儿所不同。
ETYMOLOGY
  • During the British colonial period, institutions providing preschool education already existed but did not enter the mainstream.
  • In the 1960s, the People’s Action Party (PAP) began to set up preschool institutions. At that time, the People’s Association was also involved in developing the kindergarten curriculum.
  • In 1986, the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) was established, and all kindergartens under the PAP were renamed PCF Kindergartens.
  • Today, kindergartens can be classified into Government-funded kindergartens, private kindergartens managed by commercial organisations, religious kindergartens managed by religious organisations such as churches and mosques, as well as kindergartens managed by community groups. The largest preschool operator is PCF.
  • Local kindergartens generally offer three years of preschool education for children aged three to six. Since 2014, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has set up MOE Kindergartens, mainly offering preschool education for children aged five and six.
  • Most kindergarten sessions are half a day or shorter, usually split into morning and afternoon sessions, each lasting about three to four hours. This differs from full-day childcare centres.
