DEFINITION

Noun

The spirit that revolved around the motto of Nanyang University, “To thrive in adversity, to strive and improve oneself constantly”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Nanyang University, abbreviated in Mandarin as “南大” (Nantah), was founded in 1955. It was the first Chinese-medium university in Southeast Asia.
  •  The motto “To thrive in adversity, to strive and improve oneself constantly” embodies the essence of the Nantah spirit, which outlines the difficulties in the establishment of Nanyang University and its fighting spirit despite facing subsequent adversity.
  • The term “Nantah spirit” was once again thrust into the public spotlight in the mid-1990s.
  • At that time, the relationship between Nanyang University and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) became more complex. Facing the possibility of reinstating NTU’s name as “Nanyang University”, the alumni of Nanyang University made their point by campaigning for their right to define the “Nantah spirit”. They emphasised that the Nantah spirit was closely related to the experiences of the Nantah community and was not an abstract concept that could simply be inherited by NTU or other communities.
