由来
  • 英语 “new town” 的意译。
  • 新镇的概念首见于 1958 年的发展总蓝图（Master Plan）中。
  • 新镇的计划一开始由新加坡改良信托局（Singapore Improvement Trust）负责，但在新加坡独立后则由新加坡建屋发展局（Housing and Development Board）接手负责。
  • 除了建设住屋，当局还希望新镇能够促进人民之间的社交。因此，新镇的规划中还包括设立学校、公园、商店、运动器材等设施。
  • 改良信托局在50年代建设了新加坡的第一个新镇——女皇镇（Queenstown）。
  • 新加坡独立后，建屋发展局建设的第一个新镇是大巴窑（Toa Payoh）。
  • 1970 年代中期，建屋发展局沿用了 1960 年代末发展出的 “新镇构造模型”（New Town Structural Model）来建造新镇，提升了人民的生活环境。1973 年开始建造的宏茂桥（Ang Mo Kio）新镇便是依照这个模型来建造。
