ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “巴仙” is the transliteration of the English term “percent”.
  • The term is used in the everyday speech of Southeast Asian Chinese. Before the Second World War, it was also widely used in Chinese newspapers, but it is less commonly used today.
  • In addition, the phrase “一百巴仙” (“one hundred percent”) is a fixed phrase, meaning “definitely” or “fully”.
