ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “还押” is a paraphrase of the English term “remand” .
  • Before trial, the accused may be temporarily detained, to await a court hearing or trial.
  • According to the Singapore Criminal Procedure Code 2010, if the court believes that the case investigation requires the assistance of the accused, the judge can order the accused to be temporarily detained before the hearing to assist the police or relevant departments in the investigation.
  • During detention, the accused will be under the legal custody of the Singapore Prison Service.
  • If the situation permits, the court or law enforcement unit may grant bail to the accused. If the accused is unable to provide bail, the accused will remain in prison.

SAMPLE SENTENCE
The judge eventually sentenced him to three weeks of imprisonment and a fine of $1,000. As he failed to pay the fine, he would be imprisoned for two additional days instead. His sentence was backdated to 25 May when he was in remand. (Lianhe Zaobao, 26/6/2021)
