由来

同济医院一名中的 “同济”，取自其使命 “一视同仁、博施济众”。因此，同济医院的名字寓意着任何需要帮助的人都会得到同等的救济。
1867 年，本地的广东籍华侨先贤创办了同济医社，即同济医院的前身。医社不只是一间体恤贫苦劳众的中医诊所，也是南来移民聚会、议事及互助的地方。
1892 年，同济医社因各种善举获得当时英殖民政府的赞许，随后便迁入位于余东旋街（Eu Tong Sen Street）的宫院式建筑（今已停用，该建筑改称为 “旧同济医院” 以作区分），并将同济医社改名为同济医院。
1973 年，新加坡政府将旧同济医院列为国家古迹。
1976 年 11 月 28 日，同济医院搬到了振瑞路（Chin Swee Road）的同济大厦，由当时的总理李光耀主持揭幕典礼。
2010 年 3 月 11 日，同济医院进行募款以扩建和翻新同济大厦及筹备医疗基金，最终共筹得新币八百三十九万元。
为了造福更多人，同济医院至今已在宏茂桥（Ang Mo Kio）、盛港（Sengkang）、勿洛水池路（Bedok Reservoir）及武吉巴督（Bukit Batok）开设了四间社区诊所。
同济医院成立了各专科小组，以提高施医赠药的水平。为了培育卓越的中医人才，同济医院也成立了同济医药研究学院，引进顶尖的中医教授开课，并设置奖学金让有志者前往中国深造。
2017年，同济医院董事会成立 “同济基金”，为施医赠药之善举作出物质保证及奠定良好的经济基础。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “同济” in “同济医院” is taken from its mission of “一视同仁、博施济众”, which means “to treat all regardless of race, religion and nationality without prejudice; to give freely to help the community”. Therefore, the name of Thong Chai Medical Institution implies that anyone who needs help will receive equal relief.
In 1867, the overseas Chinese Cantonese leaders in Singapore founded Thong Chai Yee Say (“同济医社”), the predecessor of Thong Chai Medical Institution. It was not only a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic that took care of the poor and working masses, but also a place for Chinese immigrants to gather, discuss matters, and help each other.
In 1892, Thong Chai Yee Say won the approval of the British colonial government for its various charitable acts. Later, it moved into a building with traditional Chinese architecture at Eu Tong Sen Street and was renamed as Thong Chai Medical Institution (today, the building is no longer in use and is known as Old Thong Chai Medical Institution to distinguish it from the present Thong Chai Medical Institution).
In 1973, the Singapore Government gazetted the Old Thong Chai Medical Institution as a National Monument.
On 28 November 1976, Thong Chai Medical Institution moved to Thong Chai Building at Chin Swee Road and was officially opened by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
On 11 March 2010, Thong Chai Medical Institution solicited donations to expand and renovate Thong Chai Building and for starting a medical fund. It eventually raised a total of S$8.39 million.
To benefit more people, Thong Chai Medical Institution has opened four community clinics in Ang Mo Kio, Sengkang, Bedok Reservoir, and Bukit Batok.
Thong Chai Medical Institution has established various specialised groups to improve its free medical services. To cultivate outstanding medical talents in TCM, it also established Thong Chai Institute of Medical Research, brought in top TCM professors to conduct classes, and set up scholarships for aspiring individuals to further their studies in China.
In 2017, the Board of Directors of Thong Chai Medical Institution set up the Thong Chai Fund to provide material assurance and establish a solid financial foundation for the charitable medicine services
