ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “脑力激荡” is a paraphrase of the English term “brainstorming”.
  • Brainstorming is a creative thinking method invented by Alex F. Osborn, founder of the American advertising company, BBDO.
  • The literal meaning of the English term “brainstorming” combines the words “brain” and “storming”, suggesting sudden, intense activity in the brain. This is used as an analogy for the method of collective thinking that enables ideas to bounce off one another, creating a chain effect that leads to more ideas.
  • Participants involved in brainstorming are required to do the following:
  1. Provide as many ideas as possible.
  2. Avoid judgments during the ideation stage.
  3. Encourage meaningful, free associations of ideas.
  4. Make use of and improve upon others’ ideas.
