The colloquial name for the area around Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre and Beauty World Centre.

由来
  • “条石”一词指长方形的石块。
  • 19世纪中期，在市区以外的地址规划尚未系统化之前，新加坡邮政总局（General Post Office，即如今的富丽敦酒店，Fullerton Hotel）的所在地便是公路系统的零原点（point zero）。从零原点算起，沿着主要公路的每一英里，英国殖民地政府都设立了一座石制的里程碑。
  • 这类石制的里程碑由砂岩和花岗岩制成，每块高达两米，埋在地里时，约35公分露出地面。
  • 根据当时的规划，由于现今的武吉知马巴刹与熟食中心及美世界一带离零原点约七英里，因此称为“七条石”，即第七座条石的意思。
  • 在新加坡市政委员会（Singapore Municipal Committee）自19世纪中期开发市中心以外的道路之后，当局才开始建立沿用至今的公路系统，替代石制的里程碑。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Chinese term “条石” refers to rectangular blocks of stone.
  • Before the mid-19th century, Singapore’s road system centred around the General Post Office (Fullerton Hotel today). Starting from this point zero, a stone marker was installed at every mile along the main roads.
  • These markers were made of sandstone and granite, each measuring up to 2 metres; when installed, about 35 centimetres protruded from the ground.
  • The area around present-day Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre and Beauty World Centre lay seven miles from point zero, and hence came to be known as “七条石” (“seventh milestone”).
  • As the Singapore Municipal Committee developed new roads outside the city centre from the mid-19th century, the milestone system was replaced by a new road system that is still in use today.
