ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “亚洲文明博物馆” is a paraphrase of the English term “Asian Civilisations Museum” (ACM). 
  • ACM is one of the museums managed by the National Heritage Board (NHB).
  • ACM is dedicated to exploring the rich culture heritage of Asia and showcasing the diverse historical connections between Asian countries, and between Asia and the world through through its collection. 
  • On 21 April 1997, ACM’s first exhibition hall was set up at the former Tao Nan School Building and officially launched by then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. 
  • In 2003, ACM’s second exhibition hall was set up at the Empress Place Building and officially launched by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The construction works cost S$83 million and took a total of five years to complete, transforming a government office in use since the British colonial era into a  museum with modern facilities. 
  • By late 2005, ACM’s first exhibition hall in the former Tao Nan School Building officially closed.
  • In 2014, ACM went through a renovation and expansion project that cost S$25 million. The works took place in two stages, with the first involving the design of the new building, including facilities and an art gallery within it. The second stage was an extension of the previous stage and aims at upgrading the museum facilities.
  • The ACM has three levels of exhibition spaces, housing a total of 11 galleries. Each level features different themes, which are “Maritime Trade”, “Faith & Belief”, and “Materials & Design” respectively. 
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, ACM introduced a virtual exhibition tour to replicate the museum experience online.
