  1. “Baba” refers to a male descendant of interracial marriages between the early Chinese male migrants (before the nineteenth century) who migrated from southern China to the Malay Peninsula or Indonesia, and indigenous women from the region.
  2. Usually refers to the descendants of Chinese men who married indigenous women, but could also refer to descendants of the early Chinese migrants whose languages and customs were different from the new migrants who came to Southeast Asia in the late nineteenth century to early twentieth century.

  • “峇峇”源自于波斯语，后传入印度，是对男性长辈的尊称。这个词语由印度人带入马来群岛，成为马来民族借用来称呼外籍长辈的尊称。
  • 后来“峇峇”用来指称早期华族男性与土著女性通婚所生下的男性后代，相当于“少爷”或“先生”的意思，也延伸为指称这一特殊族群。“峇峇”一词最早在文献出现是在十八世纪的吧城华人公馆的《公安簿》。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The term baba originated from the Persian language, which later spread to India. It was the formal term of respect for male elders. The Indian migrants brought this term to the Malay Archipelago, and the Malays used it as a polite title for the elders from other ethnic groups.
  • Subsequently, the term baba was used to refer to male descendants of interracial marriages between Chinese men and indigenous women in the olden days, as well as the special community in which they belong to. The term has the meaning of “younger master” or “mister”. The first use of the term baba appeared in the eighteenth century book “Gong An Bu” (《公安簿》), by the Chinese Council of Batavia (Kong Koan).
