ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “烧烤” in Singapore refers to barbecuing food with charcoal fire and may also broadly refer to food that is roasted or cooked with fire.
  • Barbecues are usually held outdoors, with food prepared by the host and guests together. During the barbecue, participants may also engage in leisure and entertainment activities.
  • In Singapore, barbecue pits (known in Mandarin as “烧烤台” or “烧肉台”) refer to the charcoal pit and food table used for barbecues and are commonly installed in parks or condominiums.
  • In recent years, the Government has expanded community clubs and installed barbecue pits on the newly-built rooftops for residents to organise barbecues.
