ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “酒保” is a paraphrase of the English term “bartender”.
  • A bartender’s main job is mixing drinks, including cocktails. On certain occasions, the bartender may perform flair bartending – theatrically tossing or spinning bottles, shakers and glasses in a visual spectacle for the bar’s patrons.
  • Good bartenders know the recipes of various cocktails by heart, and are able to mix drinks quickly and with minimal wastage.
  • Bartenders are also responsible for keeping track of guests’ bills, operating the cash register, and cleaning the establishment. As part of their service, they may engage customers in conversation.
