释义

名词

明古连街(Bencoolen Street)的俗称。也称“五马路”。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Bencoolen Street. Also known in Mandarin as “五马路”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term 斋堂后” (behind the Avalokitesvara [Guanyin] temple) is a paraphrase of the Hokkien dialect term zhay tng au.
  •  Bencoolen Street was named to commemorate Sir Stamford Raffles who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra in the early 19th century.
  • As Bencoolen Street is the fifth major road that runs parallel to North Bridge Road, it is also colloquially known as “五马路” (road number five).
  • The Mandarin term “斋堂” in “斋堂后” refers to Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple that is located on Waterloo Street (colloquially known as “四马路”).
  • In Singapore, Guanyin temples are generally known as “斋堂”, which is a venue of cultivation for Xiantiandao. The name came about as its believers need to practise abstinence and consume vegetarian food (“斋”).
  • As Bencoolen Street is the main road behind Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple (a Guanyin temple) at Waterloo Street, it is colloquially known as “斋堂后”.
例句
