由来
  • 源自福建话 zhay tng au。
  • 在新加坡，观音堂一般称为“斋堂”。斋堂属于先天道的道场，而因为教徒皆需受戒吃斋，所以其名称由此而来。
  • “斋堂后”这个名称中的“斋堂”指的是坐落于滑铁卢街（俗称“四马路”，Waterloo Street）的观音堂佛祖庙（Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple）。由于明古连街是位于观音堂佛祖庙（即斋堂）后方的主要道路，因此被俗称为“斋堂后”。
  • 由于明古连街是与桥北路（North Bridge Road）平行的第五条主要街道，因此也俗称为“五马路”。
  • 明古连街的命名是为了纪念斯坦福·莱佛士爵士（Sir Stamford Raffles）在19世纪初担任苏门答腊（Sumatra）明古连的总督。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “斋堂后” originated from the Hokkien dialect term zhay tng au.
  • In Singapore, temples dedicated to the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) are generally known as “斋堂”, where a form of folk religion known as Xiantiandao is practised. The name came about as its believers observe a vegetarian diet (“斋”).
  • The term “斋堂” in “斋堂后” refers to the famous Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple located on Waterloo Street (colloquially known as “四马路”). As Bencoolen Street runs behind this temple, it came to be colloquially known as “斋堂后” (literally, “behind the Guanyin temple”).
  • Bencoolen Street is the fifth major road that runs parallel to North Bridge Road, and is hence also colloquially known as “五马路” (literally, “fifth major road”).
  • As for the road’s official name, Bencoolen Street commemorates Sir Stamford Raffles, who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra in the early 19th century.
