ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “中央商业区” is a paraphrase of the English term “Central Business District”.
  • According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) planning, the Central Business District (CBD) starts from Raffles Place and extends along Shenton Way, Robinson Road, and Cecil Street, before ending at the Anson Road and Tanjong Pagar Road areas.
  • With the development of the new downtown at Marina Bay, the eastern boundary of the CBD has since extended to Sheares Avenue, while the north-eastern boundary is extended to Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort and the new commercial district at Marina Bay.
  • The URA plans to transform the CBD into a place where people can work, live, and relax through recreational activities.
  • The CBD is also a Restricted Zone, and vehicles entering the zone during designated peak hours will have to pay toll charges. The toll scheme was implemented in June 1975.
