DEFINITION

Noun

Refers to metal coins, so named because they are primarily silver (“银”) in colour.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Since Singapore’s independence, three series of coins have been introduced. The first series, issued between 1967 and 1985, inherited the design characteristics of the British colonies. The second series was issued between 1985 and 2013, with designs based mainly on local flora. The third series, introduced in 2013, features local landmarks.
  • The first and second series consisted of six denominations: one cent, five cents, ten cents, twenty cents, fifty cents and one dollar.
  • As one-cent coins were not frequently used, the Monetary Authority of Singapore stopped issuing them on 1 April 2002. The third series of coins has no one-cent coin.
