ETYMOLOGY
  • Since Singapore’s independence, coins used in Singapore can be categorised into three series. The first series of coins was issued from 1967 to 1985, which inherited the design characteristics of the British colonies. The second series of coins was issued from 1985 to 2013, and the design was mainly based on local flora and plants. The third series of coins was issued in 2013 and still in use, and the design is primarily based on famous local landmarks.
  • The first and second series consist of six types of coins: one cent, five cents, ten cents, fifty cents and one dollar. The one cent coin is discontinued in the third series of coins.
  • As the one cent denomination is not commonly used locally, the Monetary Authority of Singapore discontinued the issuance of the one cent coin on 1 April 2002.
