ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “骨痛溢血热症” is a paraphrase of the English word “dengue fever”.
  • Dengue fever is transmitted by the aedes mosquito.
  • Dengue haemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal, is one of the complications of dengue fever (also known as “登革热” in Mandarin).
  • When dengue fever patients suffer from severe dehydration and a drastic plunge in their platelet count, which results in a tendency to haemorrhage, it is known as Dengue haemorrhagic fever.
  • Besides a persistent high fever and headache, people suffering from Dengue haemorrhagic fever may also show symptoms like nausea, vomiting, coughing, sore throat and abdominal pain.
  • Since 1953, a mutant variant of dengue fever was detected in  Southeast Asia countries such as the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and even places like India and Sri Lanka. It mainly affected children between 3 and 10 years old.
  • Between January and March 2021, there were 1,872 cases of dengue fever in Singapore, including 5 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever.
  • Members of the public can check out the daily or weekly number of dengue cases through the official website of the National Environment Agency.
