DEFINITION

Noun

Very short and tight women’s shorts worn as outerwear, the length of which usually reaches to the buttocks area. Also known in Mandarin as “迷你热裤” or “迷你裤”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “热裤” is a paraphrase of the English term “hot pants”.
  • The term “hot pants” first appeared in the New York magazine Women’s Wear Daily around the late 1960s to the early 1970s. At that time, hot pants were becoming popular in Western countries, succeeding the miniskirt. It is said that the fashion trend was started by the French actress Brigitte Bardot, who removed her expensive, thick coat at a friend’s party to reveal the stunning hot pants she was wearing.
  • The pioneer designers of the hot pants are the late Italian fashion designer Mariuccia Mandelli and British fashion designer Mary Quant.
  • Since Singapore’s independence in the 20th century, global fashion trends began to increasingly influence Singaporean women, such as the trend of wearing hot pants then.
  • After hot pants became popular in Singapore, the term also started to appear in Singapore. For example, as early as 1971, the Mandarin term “热裤” appeared in local Chinese newspapers such as Nanyang Siang Pau, Sin Chew Daily, and Shin Min Daily News. However, Singapore society was more conservative then and women wearing hot pants were conspicuous. Therefore, there was greater concern about the personal safety of women who wore hot pants and their impact on the people around them.
