DEFINITION

Noun

An area along Serangoon Road, which embodies Indian heritage and culture.

(Church of the True Light)和甘榜加卜卫理公会(Kampong Kapor Methodist Church)。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Little India mainly refers to the area along Serangoon Road.
  • In the 1820s, migrants from India arrived in Singapore. However, they did not first settle at Serangoon Road, but in the area around Market Street and Chulia Street. During the 1880s, as the number of Indian migrants continued to grow, Serangoon Road became another area where they settled at.
  • Some roads in Little India have names associated with cattle. For example, the “kerbau” in Kerbau Road is Malay for “bullock”, and the “lembu” in Lembu Road is Malay for “cow”.
  • In the early days, Little India was not just a place where Indians to reside in. Race Course Road is Singapore’s first horse racing turf. It attracted people from all races, especially the upper echelon of the European society. Street names like Dunlop Road, Cuff Road, Desker Road were legacies from Europeans residing in the Little India area.
  • In Little India, there are many places of worship for different religions. They include the Masjid Abdul Gaffoor on Dunlop Road, Church of the True Light on Perak Road and the Kampong Kapor Methodist Church.
