ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “多元种族” is a paraphrase of the English term “multi-racial”.
  • Since Singapore’s independence, its population has been made up of many races, with the four major ones being Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian. To promote racial harmony, Singapore has implemented a number of policies, such as a bilingual education system, a fair military service system, and a quota system for Housing & Development Board flats that ensures families of different races live within the same neighbourhood, effectively maintaining multi-racial social harmony.
  • As of 2023, the resident population in Singapore is made up of 74.0% Chinese, 13.5% Malay, 9.0% Indian, and 3.4% other races.
