释义

名词

槟榔路(Penang Road)的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of the Penang Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “皇家山后” (behind Fort Canning Hill) is a paraphrase of the Hokkien or Teochew dialect term ong keh sua au.
  • Fort Canning Hill boasts a long history. The gold ornaments, Chinese porcelain artefacts and architecture discovered by modern archaeologists at the park can be traced back to the fourteenth century. Since Singapore was a trade transit point along the Maritime Silk Road during the Middle Ages, archaeologists also found a large number of ceramic artifacts from the Yuan Dynasty in Fort Canning Hil.
  • As Penang Road is the main road behind the foot of Fort Canning Hill, the road is colloquially known as “皇家山后”.
  • Penang Road was built in 1906 and was named after Penang in Malaysia. In its Chinese equivalent “槟榔路”, the term “槟榔” refers to “槟榔屿”, an early name of Penang.
