ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “拼图” is a paraphrase of the English term “photofit” or “identikit”.
This tool re-constructs facial composites for identification and is based on clues provided by witnesses on a suspect’s facial features.
A photofit shows facial features such as the forehead, hairstyle, eyes, nose, mouth, lower jaw, beard, and includes accessories such as spectacles and headwear.
The police will first sketch a basic facial composite for the witnesses or victims to identify. Upon confirmation, the police will sequentially construct the eyes, nose, mouth, and lower jaw of the facial composite, until the witnesses or victims determine that the composite is correct.
Upon completing the suspect’s facial composite, the police will track down the suspect accordingly.
In 1994, to improve the efficiency of solving cases, the Singapore Police started sourcing for an advanced computer system to replace the manual photofit method that had been in use for more than a decade. At that time, there were 900 types of facial shapes, 700 types of eyes, 500 types of mouths, 300 types of noses, and 300 types of chins that can be selected for manual composite photographs.
