• It is commonly believed that the Mandarin term “乐龄” originated in the 1970s. At that time, the first local activity centre for the elderly was established at Maude Road in Jalan Besar and it is said that this is the first time the term “乐龄中心”(Senior Citizens’ Centre) was used in Singapore. Since then, “乐龄” gradually became a synonym for the elderly in Singapore.
• “乐龄” literally translates as “happy age”. By replacing “old” or “elderly” with the word “happy”, the term implies that an elderly person can live and learn happily like youngsters and is not limited by age.

The first large-scale facility, combining a Senior Care Centre and Active Ageing Hub, has officially opened in Singapore. Besides providing extended hours of daycare service and social activities to more than 200 elderly residents in Ghim Moh, Queenstown, Ulu Pandan, Clementi and Bukit Timah, the facility also provides emergency care for the elderly residents living in the 222 studio apartments nearby.（Lianhe Zaobao, 25/4/2019）

• Whether it is a government policy or project, activities and matters related to the elderly are often tagged with the term “乐龄”. As a result, many new terms were created such as Retirement Village (乐龄村), Senior Citizen's Week (乐龄周), Senior Citizens’ Centre (乐龄中心), Senior Citizen Apartment (乐龄公寓) and Senior Activity Centre （乐龄活动中心）.
