ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “强力胶” is a paraphrase of the term “super glue”.
  • Toluene is the main solvent in super glue. When inhaled, it produces a high. However, it can also harm one’s health, causing brain, muscle, nerve and organ damage, memory loss, blurred vision, uncoordinated body movements, easy bruising and bleeding, involuntary spasms, pain and coughing. It can also result in learning difficulties.
  • Withdrawal symptoms of superglue abuse include emotional anxiety, depression, irritability, aggressive behaviour, dizziness, nausea, and insomnia.
  • In the 1980s, glue-sniffing (otherwise known as solvent abuse) was a serious social problem in Singapore. Teenagers would pour super glue into plastic bags and hold them over their noses to sniff and get high.
  • In 1987, the Singapore government passed a law that made solvent abuse illegal. Solvent abusers who are arrested can be sentenced to six months of treatment in a drug rehabilitation centre. They can also be sentenced with a fine of $2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both. Dealers who sell super glue can be fined $5,000 or imprisoned for up to two years, or both.
