释义

名词

位于东海岸(East Coast)和马林百列(Marine Parade)一带的邻里。简称“加东”(Katong)。

DEFINITION

Noun

A neighbourhood in the East Coast and Marine Parade area. Abbreviated in Mandarin as “加东”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “丹戎加东” is the transliteration of the Malay name Tanjong Katong. Tanjong or tanjung means “cape” or “headland”, while katong or katung refers to a type of turtle which is now extinct. Katong or katung could also refer to the ripple effect caused by coastal mirages.
  • In the early days, Katong was a coastal area with many coconut plantations.
  • In the early 20th century, the Peranakan Chinese and Eurasians built many seaside holiday villas in Katong. Some buildings in the area still retain the architectural characteristics of that era.
  • In 1966, the Government began to implement land reclamation projects. As a result, the seaside villas were no longer adjacent to the coast.
