DEFINITION

Noun

One of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore, located at Telok Ayer Street. It mainly worships the goddess Mazu. Also known in Mandarin as “妈祖宫”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • According to the stone steles that record the founding of Thian Hock Keng Temple, the term “天福” means that “the silent blessings from the deities are similar to blessings from heaven”.
  • Thian Hock Keng Temple, located at Telok Ayer Bay, was originally a place of worship where Hokkien Chinese seafarers worshipped Mazu for protection.
  • In 1839, under the leadership of businessman and philanthropist Tan Tock Seng, the prayer venue was extensively reconstructed into the present Thian Hock Keng Temple.
  • In addition to Mazu, the main hall of Thian Hock Keng Temple is also dedicated to Heavenly Sage Guan and Heavenly Sage Bao Sheng. As the hall at the back of the temple is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin Bodhisattva), Thian Hock Keng Temple is also colloquially known as “观音庙” (meaning “Guanyin Temple”) among worshippers.
  • In 1907, to commend the Hokkien community in Singapore for raising funds for flood relief in Quanzhou in 1905, the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty presented Thian Hock Keng Temple with an imperial letter bearing the four characters “波靖南溟”, which symbolised Mazu blessing the South China Sea with calmness and tranquility. This imperial letter was later made into a plaque and hung in the main hall of the temple.
  • Thian Hock Keng Temple was gazetted as a National Monument in 1973.
  • From 1998 to 2000, Thian Hock Keng Temple was extensively restored and received four architectural awards for it, including the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.
