ETYMOLOGY
  • In Singapore, matters related to blood donation are managed by the Health Sciences Authority. It also collaborates with the Singapore Red Cross to actively raise the public’s awareness of blood donation and to recruit donors.
  • An adult’s body contains four to five litres of blood on average. The quantity of blood donated each time ranges from 350 to 450 ml.
  • In Singapore’s blood bank, 39% goes to surgical use, 32% goes to general medical use, 10% is used for treating blood diseases, another 10% is used for treating cancer, 5% is used for obstetrics and gynaecology, and 4% is for other uses.
  • To donate blood, members of the public must meet the following criteria: Generally healthy; no symptoms of infectious diseases (such as cold, cough, sore throat or diarrhoea) in the one week before blood donation; no fever in the four weeks prior; no antibiotics taken in the last seven days; weight of over 45 kg; and a haemoglobin count of at least 13.0 g/dl for men, and 12.5 g/dl for women.
  • As of 2023, only 1.87% of Singaporeans had donated blood. Among them, 22% were first-time blood donors, 39% were regular blood donors, and 15% were blood donors aged 25 and below.
