  • 珍珠街的两端分别衔接桥南路（South Bridge Road）和中国街（China Street），而珍珠街上段原衔接桥南路以及今芳邻大厦（Hong Lim Complex）一带。
  • 关于珍珠街英文街名 “Chin Chew” 的由来有两种说法。第一种说法是，该名是中国福建省漳州市的音译。第二种说法是，此街道临近珍珠山（Pearl’s Hill），因而得名。
  • 由于珍珠街上段早期有许多摊贩在当地磨豆腐及卖豆腐，因此俗称为 “豆腐街”。
  • 根据乔治·德鲁姆古尔·哥里门（George Drumgoole Coleman）绘制的 1836 年版新加坡地图，“Chin Chew Street” 在当时就存在，而在巴克利（Buckley）绘制的地图中则显示豆腐街是介于 1830 年至 1835 年间发展而成的街道。

ETYMOLOGY
  • Chin Chew Street connects to South Bridge Road at one end and China Street at the other. Upper Chin Chew Street originally connects to South Bridge Road and the vicinity of today’s Hong Lim Complex. 
  • There are two beliefs regarding the origin of the English road name “Chin Chew”. The first is that it is the transliteration of Zhangzhou City in Fujian Province, China. The second belief is that this street was named this way because it was near Pearl’s Hill (珍珠山).
  • As there were many vendors making and selling bean curd at Upper Chin Chew Street in the early days, it was colloquially known in Mandarin as “豆腐街” (literally beancurd street).
  • According to the 1836 Singapore map drawn by George Drumgoole Coleman, Chin Chew Street had already existed at that time. The map drawn by Buckley showed that Upper Chin Chew Street was built between 1830 and 1835.
  • In the 1820s, Upper Chin Chew Street was a residential area for the Indian community. However, it later evolved into a Chinese residential area that was mainly inhabited by the Samsui women from Sanshui County in Guangdong Province, China.
  • Upper Chin Chew Street was also known in Mandarin as “黑布街” (literally "black cloth street") as many samsui women who typically wore red headscarves and black clothing lived there.
  • In the early days, Upper Chin Chew Street was a bustling street with restaurants, theatres, music halls and brothels.
