释义

名词

新加坡国花的名称。

DEFINITION

Noun

Singapore’s national flower.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In 1893, Miss Agnes Joaquim, a horticulturist living in Singapore, successfully cultivated a breed of orchid through crossbreeding. This new breed of orchid was thus named after her.
  • On 14 April 1981, Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as Singapore’s national flower.
  • There are also parks and roads named after Vanda Miss Joaquim, such as Vanda Drive and Vanda Crescent.
  • According to National Parks, the parent plants for Vanda Miss Joaquim should be the Papilionanthe instead of the Vanda. However, the name Vanda Miss Joaquim has been retained.
例句
国家公园局网站在介绍新加坡国花卓锦万代兰时提到,卓锦万代兰由柱叶万代兰(Vanda teres)和克氏万代兰(Vanda hookeriana)两个原生种交配而成。但近年有研究显示,国花的这对“父母”原来应属类凤蝶兰(Papilionanthe),而非万代兰(Vanda)。(《联合早报》,20/4/2016)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
As mentioned in the introduction of Singapore’s national flower on the National Parks’ website, Vanda Miss Joaquim was a crossbreed between Vanda teres and Vanda hookeriana. However, studies in recent years have shown that Vanda Miss Joaquim’s parent plants belong to the Papilionanthe genus instead of the Vanda genus. (Lianhe Zaobao, 20/4/2016)
