  • “新谣”这个词的出现，一般认为是在1982年9月4日由《南洋商报》主办的《我们唱着的歌》座谈会上提出的。一群新加坡青年歌手与词曲作家希望能为自己创作的歌谣塑造特点与认同，于是提出将自己的歌谣命名为“新谣”。
  • 当时电台广播、台湾校园歌曲及诗乐（结合现代诗与音乐的本土歌乐）推动了新谣的发展，许多初级学院和理工学院的学生都开始成立歌唱小组。新谣的流传主要通过校园交流会与演唱会，演唱方式多由主唱者以钢琴、六弦琴与其他轻便的乐器伴唱。第一场新谣演唱会于1983年举办，地点是新加坡大会堂。
  • 一般人把“新谣”定义为1980到1990年代本地年轻人创作的华语歌曲。近年来，新加坡年轻人创作的歌曲已有了较大的转变。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “Xinyao” is believed to have first appeared in a seminar titled “The Songs We Sang”, organised by Nanyang Siang Pau on 4 September 1982. A group of young Singaporean singers and songwriters were seeking to create an identity for the songs that they wrote and suggested naming their songs “Xinyao”.
  • Xinyao’s popularity grew thanks to support from radio stations, as well as the concurrent trends in Taiwanese campus folk songs and “诗乐” (poetry-music, an artform combining poetry and music). Many junior college and polytechnic students started forming singing groups. Xinyao songs, which are usually performed with piano or guitar accompaniment, spread among the schools via school exchange
    programmes and concerts. The first Xinyao concert took place in 1983 at the Singapore Conference Hall.
  • “Xinyao” refers specifically to Mandarin songs created by Singaporean songwriters in the 1980s to 1990s. In recent years, young Singaporean songwriters have developed their own style of music that differs considerably from Xinyao.
