ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “零和” is a paraphrase of the English term “zero-sum”.
  • The concept of “零和” originated from Game Theory, which suggests that in certain situations, if one side gains, it will be balanced by an equal loss on the other side. As a result, the sum of the gains and losses across all sides will always balance out to zero.
  • “Zero-sum” (“零和”) is the antonym of “win-win” (“双赢”).
  • The term “零和” is also often used in politics to refer to the inflexible stances of two opposing countries.
