由来
  • 源自福建话或潮州话 dua seh gai au 的意译。
  • 大世界于 1929 年落成，由一处华人坟场修建而成，为附近低收入家庭提供了娱乐休闲活动。
  • 大世界共有四家电影院、一家夜总会及两家餐馆，每年也会举办两次商业展览会，因此成为人们吃喝玩乐的好去处。
  • 随着娱乐休闲的渠道增加，大世界的魅力不再，最终于 1964 年 3 月底关闭。
  • 由于锡安路是位于大世界后方的主要道路，因此被俗称为 “大世界后”。
  • 有说法认为锡安路名称的由来和当地原有的一座名为锡安山的山丘有关。锡安，即 “Zion” 一词则是耶路撒冷（Jerusalem）的代称。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “大世界后” (behind Great World) originated from the Hokkien or Teochew dialect term dua seh gai au.
  • Completed in 1929, Great World Amusement Park was built on a former Chinese cemetery to provide entertainment and leisure activities for the low-income families nearby.
  • There were four cinemas, one nightclub, and two restaurants in Great World Amusement Park. The park also held two commercial exhibitions every year and was a popular destination for dining and recreation.
  • With the increase in entertainment and leisure options, Great World Amusement Park declined in popularity and closed at the end of March 1964.
  • As Zion Road is the main road behind Great World Amusement Park, the road was colloquially known as “大世界后”.
  • It is believed that the origin of the name Zion Road was related to a local knoll named Mount Zion in the area. “Zion” is an alternative name for Jerusalem.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
The Chinese family group of the Church of St. Bernadette, located at Zion Road, will hold a thanksgiving mass at the church to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the group on 17 June (Sunday) at 7.30am. (Nanyang Siang Pau, 16/6/1979)
