  • The Mandarin term “背包客” is a paraphrase of the English term “backpacker”.
  • The concept of backpacking originated in the 17th to 19th century, influenced by the European aristocrats’ penchant for travelling.
  • Nowadays, backpackers generally refer to those who carry backpacks for long-distance self-guided travel. They advocate spending the least amount of money walking the longest distances and taking the less travelled path to enjoy different experiences.
