DEFINITION

Noun

A living arrangement in which a tenant lives with other tenants in the same apartment during the rental period.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term 共享住宿 is a paraphrase of the English term “co-living”.
  • Co-living emerged in Singapore around 2010.
  • Co-living has been increasing in popularity mainly because of the following reasons: first, it provides tenants living communally with the opportunity to meet like-minded friends; second, it has a shorter lease period; third, the rent is more affordable. Thus, co-living is popular among international students, business travellers, and non-residents.
  • The Urban Redevelopment Authority stipulates that tenants who opt for co-living must do so for at least three months and that there must be no more than six tenants per unit.
  • Operators of co-living spaces are not required to obtain business licenses such as those for hotels or real estate.
  • In 2020, many locals chose co-living due to COVID-19. This included those who experienced family disputes and hence needed independent living spaces.
