ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “骑劫” is a paraphrase of the English term “hijack”.
  • Apart from meaning “to unlawfully seize”, the term “骑劫” has also evolved to mean the following in the Singapore context:
  1. Theft of social media accounts. For example, “The Facebook account of local getai singer Wang Lei was hijacked.”
  2. Theft, interception or manipulation of online data. For example, “US Internet company Google’s data was hijacked by hackers.”
  3. Control or hold at ransom. For example, “Science has been hijacked by politics.”
