释义

名词

禧街(Hill Street)的俗称。也称“打火厝前”。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Hill Street. Also known in Mandarin as“打火厝前”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The “水仙门” area was large and was centered at the site of the present High Street Centre (“水仙门中心”, formerly known as “水仙门商业大厦”) located at North Boat Quay. From the estuary of the Singapore River, Hill Street was the second street in the “水仙门” area and was thus also colloquially known as “水仙门二街” (second street in “水仙门”).
  •  It is believed that the Chinese character “禧” in “禧街”, the Mandarin term for Hill Street, is the dialect transliteration of the English term “hill”, which in this case refers to the nearby Fort Canning Hill.
  • It is believed that the name “水仙门” originated from “水仙门” (Water Deity Gate) near the customs in Quanzhou Prefecture during the Song Dynasty, which was in turn named after a local “水仙宫” (Water Deity Temple) where seafarers went for worshipping.
  • According to available historical records, there was no temple named “水仙宫” in Singapore in the early days. It is believed that the name “水仙门” was coined by early Quanzhou immigrants to refer to the mouth of the Singapore River, in reference to the estuary of Quanzhou, in a bid to preserve the customs and traditions of their homeland.
