DEFINITION

Noun

A portable work gadget that connects a computer and a mobile phone, allowing the two devices to send and receive data.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “流动办公室” is a paraphrase of the English term “mobile office”.
  • In 1996, PageLink, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singtel, officially launched mobile office services.
  • In addition to sending and receiving messages and mobile data, the mobile office was equipped with functions such as mobile fax and mobile message.
  • To use these functions, the users mobile phone had to be connected to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) or Personal Communications Network (PCN).
  • With this, a person with a mobile phone or computer could work anytime and anywhere without the need to connect to a fixed telephone line and hence have greater flexibility in choosing locations from which to work remotely (a novelty in the 1990s).
