  • 翡珑山在工程师兼建筑师约翰麦克耐尔少校(Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair)于1873年绘制的新加坡岛地图中便已被标示。
  • 翡珑山从1950年代起就是新加坡辜加警察团的居住地,目前也是辜加警察团营地的所在地。
  • 除了辜加警察团,新加坡首座公共火化场和防止虐待动物协会(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)也曾坐落于翡珑山。
  • 翡珑山西侧曾是比达达利(Bidadari)坟场。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Mount Vernon was already marked on the map of Singapore Island drawn in 1873 by the engineer and architect Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair.
  • Mount Vernon became the residence of the Gurkha Contingent in Singapore in the 1950s, and it remains the site of the Gurkha Cantonment today.
  • Singapore’s first public crematorium and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) were formerly located at Mount Vernon. ƒ To the west of Mount Vernon was Bidadari Cemetery.

  • Mount Vernon Crematorium, Singapore’s first public crematorium, was opened in October 1962. In line with the Government’s initiative of encouraging cremation in lieu of burial, 15 columbarium blocks were added in 1976 and two funeral parlours in 1978. In 2000, the Government designated Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium Complex as Singapore’s sole public crematorium. As a result, Mount Vernon Crematorium was closed in 2004, while its remaining service halls and columbarium were subsequently closed in 2018.
  • SPCA moved from Orchard Road to Mount Vernon in 1984 and subsequently to Sungei Tengah in 2016.
