Noun

The area located slightly east of central Singapore, north of MacPherson and east of Potong Pasir. Also known in Mandarin as “翡龙山”.

由来
  • 翡珑山在工程师兼建筑师约翰·麦克耐尔少校（Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair）于 1873 年绘制的新加坡岛地图中便已被标示。
  • 翡珑山从 1950 年代起就是新加坡辜加警察团的居住地，目前也是辜加警察团营地的所在地。营地周围的环境效仿尼泊尔的建筑与风俗文化，希望能减少这些身在外地的雇佣兵和他们家眷的思乡之苦。
  • 翡珑山西侧曾是比达达利（Bidadari）坟场的所在地。
  • 除了辜加警察团，新加坡首座公共火化场以及防止动物虐待协会（Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals）也曾坐落于翡珑山。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Mount Vernon was already marked on the map of Singapore Island drawn in 1873 by engineer and architect Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair.
  • Mount Vernon has been the residence of the Gurkha Contingent in Singapore since the 1950s, and it is currently the location of the Gurkha Contingent’s cantonment. The environment around the cantonment reflects Nepali architecture, customs, and culture. This is aimed at reducing feelings of homesickness among the hired soldiers and their families living in a foreign land.
  • On the west of Mount Vernon used to be Bidadari Cemetery.
  • In addition to the Gurkha Contingent, Singapore’s first public crematorium and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) were also located at Mount Vernon.

  • 翡珑山火化场是新加坡首座公共火化场，于1962年10月启用。随着当局鼓励人们使用火葬来替代土葬，政府于1976年在翡珑山兴建了15个骨灰安置所，并于1978年开设两座殡仪馆。政府于2000年将万礼万礼火化场及骨灰安置所（Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium Complex）设定为公共火化场，因此翡珑山火化场于2004年关闭，剩下的殡仪馆及骨灰安置所也于2018年完全关闭。 
  • 防止虐待动物协会于 1984 年从乌节路搬到翡珑山，并于 2016 年搬迁至双溪登加（Sungei Tengah）。

  • Mount Vernon Crematorium, Singapore’s first public crematorium, was opened in October 1962. In line with the authorities’ initiative of encouraging cremation in lieu of burial, the Government built 15 columbaria at Mount Vernon in 1976 and opened two funeral parlours in 1978. In 2000, the Government designated Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium Complex as a public crematorium. As a result, Mount Vernon Crematorium was closed in 2004, while its remaining service halls and columbarium subsequently closed in 2018.
  • SPCA moved from Orchard Road to Mount Vernon in 1984 and later to Sungei Tengah in 2016.
