ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “官访” is a paraphrase of the English term “official visit”.
  • Official visits are usually arranged and hosted by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
  • The itinerary of an official visit mainly includes welcoming and seeing off VIPs, meetings between leaders or senior officials from both sides, and banquets.
  • In some cases, foreign dignitaries on official visits to Singapore get to have a new orchid hybrid named after them. This diplomatic tradition was initiated as a way to symbolise friendship and respect between the two countries.
