  • Singapore is a multi-racial, multilingual, and multi-cultural country in which majority of the population is ethnic Chinese. When people of different ethnicities interact with one another, their languages begin to influence each other.
  • In this multilingual environment, Singaporean Mandarin combines the vocabulary, grammar, phonetics, and other features of the English, Malay, Chinese dialects and other languages used locally.
  • Therefore, Singaporean Mandarin is a part of Singaporean culture and a symbol of the Singaporean Chinese identity.
  • Singapores bilingual policy has promoted the interaction of languages, which indirectly stimulated the creation of Singaporean Mandarin.
