ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “太空梭” is a paraphrase of the English term “space shuttle”.
  • In the 1970s, both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States (US) and the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute of the former Soviet Union began researching on recyclable spacecraft.
  • In 2014, the US-based commercial space shuttle manufacturer XCOR Space Expeditions opened space tourism to Singaporeans. Passengers would board the commercial space shuttle XCOR Lynx Mark II at Curaçao island in the southern Caribbean to fly into space. The space shuttle can accommodate one captain and one passenger.
  • Passengers must purchase a flight ticket costing 100,000 United States Dollars (about 125,000 Singapore Dollars) and pass a general physical examination.
  • The space shuttle would take off from Curaçao, arrive in space after three minutes and stay there for five to six minutes. In the process, passengers would also assist in reading the navigation system and monitoring the instrument panel to enjoy the unique experience of being a vice-captain.
  • At that time, not more than five people in Singapore expressed interest in flying into space. Around the world, over 300 people had expressed interest in space tourism.
