DEFINITION

Noun

A large multi-purpose field located before City Hall. Abbreviated as “大草场”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “草场” generally refers to a venue planted with grass or laid with turf. However, in Singapore’s context, “大草场” (big field) refers to a specific multi-purpose field located at City Hall.
  • The Padang has an area of approximately 4.3 hectares.
  • In the 19th century, Sir Stamford Raffles had already designated an empty plot of land along the shore when doing urban planning, indicating it as “Open Square” on the map. It is now the location of the Padang.
  • The Padang has witnessed numerous historical events and thus holds indispensable historical value to Singapore, even though it is not a physical building. These include the surrender of the Japanese troops in 1945, where the ceremony was held at the steps opposite the padang; the inauguration of Singapore’s first Head of State Yusof Ishak in 1959; the declaration of Singapore’s independence by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 1965; and the first National Day Parade in 1966 after Singapore gained independence.
  • In 2009, the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee held a mass celebration event at the Padang when Singapore won the bid to host the first Youth Olympic Games scheduled for 2010.
  • In 2019, the National Heritage Board announced that the Padang would be officially gazetted as a National Monument.
