  • The term “好命” is also used in Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka.

  • In Hokkien, “好命” has a few other meanings. It can refer to being born into a wealthy family, but it can also mean passing away, such as “我的老公去年去好命了” (“My husband ‘went to have a good life’ [passed away] last year”).
  • The GoodLife! Senior Activity Centre was jokingly dubbed “好命中心” (literally, “good life centre”) in Hokkien by some seniors. Although some found the term “好命” inelegant, the centre’s spokesperson disagreed, asserting that “好命” referred to “good health and longevity, a rich and fulfilling life, and having plenty of children and grandchildren”.
