  • 在新加坡，龙沟鱼一般虽指野生的孔雀鱼（guppy），但也可指大肚鱼（即食蚊鱼 [mosquitofish]）或茉莉鱼（molly）等小鱼。
  • 龙沟主要指路边弯曲或长的小沟渠，也有一种说法认为是指垄沟，即田垄间的水沟。
  • 1950 至 1960 年代间，新加坡的孔雀鱼品种可谓世界闻名，主要分为野生和家养两类，而前者便是一般俗称的龙沟鱼。
  • 孔雀鱼源自南美洲，外表鲜艳且有各种美丽的花纹，能在污水中生存。
  • 由于孔雀鱼为杂食性的鱼类，新加坡政府于 20 世纪初便将大量的孔雀鱼放入河渠水沟中，控制蚊子的滋生。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In Singapore, "longkang fish" generally refers to wild guppies, but can also refer to other small fishes such as mosquitofish or molly.
  • “龙沟” (longkang) refers to small roadside drains. Another belief is that it refers to “垄沟” , which means "furrows" (water channels between cultivation ridges).
  • During the 1950s and 1960s, guppy species bred in Singapore were popular worldwide. Guppies can be grouped into two types: wild and domestic. The wild type are commonly referred to as longkang fish.
  • Guppies originated from South America. They are brightly coloured, with attractive patterns, and can survive in wastewater.
  • As the guppy is an omnivorous fish, the Singapore Government has experimented with releasing large numbers of them into rivers and drains to control the breeding of mosquitoes since the start of the 20th century.
